Properties: Cr-Ni-Mo-V alloyed steel.
Applications: Moulding of corrosive plastics, e.g., PVC, acetates, and for moulds subjected to humid working/storage conditions. Production of optical parts, e.g., camera and sunglass lenses. Moulding of medical components, e.g., syringes and analysis vials. Complex moulds. Large moulds quenched using a slow cooling rate are able to achieve desirable properties such as hardness, toughness and corrosion resistance even at the centre of large dimensions.

Heat Treatment
Hardening: Austenitising temperature: 1000–1025°C, but normally 1020°C. For very large moulds, 1000°C is recommended. Quenching media: Vacuum, cooling in gas with sufficient overpressure. Fluidised bed or salt bath at 350–500°C, then cool in air blast. High speed gas/circulating atmosphere.
Tempering: Tempering at 250–300°C results in the best combination of toughness, hardness and corrosion resistance. However, for very large moulds and/or a complicated design, it is recommended to use a high tempering temperature to reduce the residual stresses to a minimum.
