Grinding cracks-network - Machining defects
Figure 1: Grinding cracks-network.
Defect name: Grinding cracks-network
Record No.: 1895
Type of defect (Internal/Surface): Surface
Defect classification: Machining defects
Steel name: Cold work tool steel
Steel composition in weight %: No data.
Note: They result from inappropriate grinding of rolls and only increase during rolling. In case of overloading of rolls they cause crushing of the roll working surface. Grinding cracks also widen if the rolled material welds on the roll and in case the roll microstructure is uneven. Figure 1 presents an example of grinding cracks on the roll working surface. Grinding cracks are the consequence of inexpert grinding of rolls, such as: inadequately dimensioned grinding machinery, bad condition of the grinding machinery, poor cooling, incorrect selection of the grinding plate, smeared grinding plate, too large giving of the grinding plate, inadequate centring of rolls.
