Figure 1: Punch made of high—carbon, high-chromium steel for punch- ing 5/8-in. abrasion-resisting steel plates. Note the evidence of wear on the circumferential surface of the working end to a depth of about 3/4 in. Excessive wear at this location removes clearance on the punch taper and may produce breakage from mechanical overloading. Decreasing the stroke of the press to about 1/2 in. would probably make a big improvement in service life.
