Rolling fin - 1.2381 steel - Cold drawing defects
Figure 1: Treatment: Spheroidised. Magnification: 6.5x. Sampling/Specification: Surface of rod wire. Testing result: Strong rolling fin on the surface.
Figure 2: Treatment: Spheroidised. Magnification: 12.5x. Etching medium: 3% alcoholic nitric acid. Sampling/Specification: Transverse. Testing result: Rolling fin 0.60 mm high.
Defect name: Rolling fin
Record No.: 483
Type of defect (Internal/Surface): Surface
Defect classification: Cold drawing defects
Steel name: 1.2381 steel
Steel composition in weight %: No data.
Note: Rolling fins are bead-like enhancements on the surface of the rod wire or of the steel bar. The defects go in lengthways direction. They can arise because of wrong adjustment of the roll groove or because of roll wear. By an overfill of the box groove, rolled piece is pushed into the roll bite. The defect can occur one-sided, but also by 180° transposed.
Rod wire 8.00 mm round - spheroidised.
