Etchant (Electrolyte) Composition: 10 g NaOH, 90 ml distilled water.
Procedure (Condition): Immerse sample 5-20 s at 70 C, then dip in conc. HNO3 to remove stain.
Note: Etch to reveal grain structure in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys. Colors NiAl3 and (Fe, Co, Ni)2Al9 brown, FeAl3 unaffected.
