Etchant (Electrolyte) Composition: Solution a: 98 ml ethanol, 2 ml HNO3. Solution b: 20 g sodium metabisulfite, 100 ml distilled water.
Procedure (Condition): Etch in solution a for 5 s, rinse, dry. Etch in solution b until surface is darkened.
Note: For austenitic Mn steels. Produces excellent grain contrast, reveals depth of surface decarburization.
